Summary: The GriefWorks Summer Institute, “When Grief & Trauma Come to School,” is a workshop for counselors, school staff, and professionals who work with grieving children. Co-hosted by the Washington School Counselors Association (WSCA), this workshop will offer 8 clock hours. The registration fee of $125 will include:

• Two books: Teen Talk, A Grief Support Group for Teenagers, an 8-week curriculum, and Our Story, a workbook for grieving children ($35 total value)
• A syllabus of the PowerPoint presentation and supplemental materials
• A salad bar lunch provided by White River Presbyterian Church Neighborhood Outreach Ministry
• Morning and afternoon snacks

In addition, attendees may purchase:
• A WSCA Certificate for 8 Clock Hours for $16. (Free to WSCA members)
• A “Grief Talk Tool Kit” used by GriefWorks staff, a $125 value for $75+tax.
You may purchase it online with your registration below.

(These must be ordered in advance at the time of registration.)

Objectives: The two-fold purpose of this workshop is 1) to offer school personnel the most current academic understanding of how grief and trauma impact children and teens and 2) to give workshop participants understanding, and tools that will assist them in supporting grieving students. The ideas and activities to be shared have been proven effective in working with students individually, in the classroom, or in groups. The morning session will provide an overview of the grieving process in youth, strategies for breaking bad news, and emotional first aid at the time of a crisis. The entire afternoon will be interactive – experiencing and practicing “grief work” in a small group setting.
